What to Tell Your Customers
Lantern runs on your customers’ computers, so they should hear what it does from you, before it is installed. Our Terms of Service make this your job, and this page gives you wording to start from.
Before you install
Ask first. Install Lantern only on a computer that belongs to your customer, or that someone with the authority to agree has said you may. Keep a record: a signed intake form, a ticket note or a reply to an email all work. Don’t install it on a computer that belongs to a child.
Sample wording
Put this in your service contract, on your intake form, in your install email, or on the page you send your install link from. Change the parts in brackets.
About the [Shop name] helper on your computer
With your permission, we install a small program on your computer that helps us look after it. It checks in with our system regularly and reports:
- your computer’s name, type, operating system, processor, memory and main drive
- the results of its health checks, such as antivirus status, drive health, free space, crashes, remote access software and battery health
- the name of the last account that signed in
- the version of the program, the IP address it connects from, and a random ID we give your computer
It does not read your files, record what you type, take screenshots, track where you are or list the programs you have installed. It installs a small updater that keeps it current, and on Windows a helper, both with administrator rights.
If it finds a problem, it shows you a message and a Request Service button. If you press it, we receive your name, phone number, email address and message.
We can also schedule maintenance on your computer, [delete this line if you don’t use TechSuite scheduling: such as a checkup that runs with administrator rights while you’re signed in].
We keep this information until you ask us to delete it, or until we delete it. To have the program removed or your information deleted, call us at [phone]. Our software provider, RepairTech, Inc., handles this information for us. You can write to it at Sacramento Labs, LLC, 5960 S Land Park Dr #1045, Sacramento, CA 95822, or read its privacy policy at repairtechsolutions.com/legal/privacy/.
When you need more
- Scheduled TechSuite runs. Get your customer’s permission for the specific maintenance you plan to run, and make sure they have a backup of anything they can’t lose.
- Customers outside the United States. The laws there can be stricter. Talk to a lawyer before you install Lantern on those computers.
- Business computers. Get agreement from the owner or the IT contact, not from an employee who uses the machine.
This page is a starting point, not legal advice. You decide what the law requires of you.
